The Department of Oncology is delighted to have received an Athena SWAN silver award in recognition of its commitment to tackling gender inequality in higher education. The awards were announced by the Equality Challenge Unit today.

The Department of Oncology was one of a number of departments and institutions around the UK to receive an award under the expanded Athena SWAN criteria, which also includes gender equality for professional and support staff, rather than solely focusing on academic careers.

Professor Gillies McKenna, Head of the Department of Oncology and Professor Madalena Tarsounas, Academic Lead said “We are very proud to have been recognised for the significant progress we have made and positive impact we have demonstrated since receiving our bronze award in 2014. We will continue to make the Department of Oncology an environment in which there are not only opportunities to excel scientifically, but where our staff and students can benefit from outstanding personal and professional development."
